5. A picture of your favorite memory

01.18.08: you called and said it's snowing and i went outside to look and it was and the flakes were big and shocking and falling round and round. i sat on my porch watching them with you on the phone until i went in from shivering and our conversation closing you said i wish i could walk in it and i wished to walk with you and letting you know you packed a bag and came and i dressed to meet you in the snow, yr head rising from yr car and the glint of snowflakes in yr beard, you were so beautiful, i felt them falling against my eyelashes and one into my mouth. we walked round my neighboorhood, middle of the road, i stopped under a street light and stared at the snowflakes drifting beneath it and said i wonder what one looks like, really looks like and you told me not to move so i didn't and i stood there looking up into the light while you snapped photos of me until i was no longer really standing there looking up and instead there i was a photo of myself a moment ago and i began to feel ridiculous so i tangled my arm into yrs and i don't remember being cold then, i don't remember being cold at all and we walked and i didn't want to stop walking but the house came back round and in we went and wished our jobs away with hopes of ice and roads unprepared and stayed up kissing and loving late into the night wrapped in blankets and heaters and each other as if it were already true, but morning came and it wasn't so you kissed me goodbye between the shower and the curtain and left me to my cold day and disappointing roads and remembering a walk in the snow.

read 2012: just kids

"You could feel a vibration in the air, a sense of hastening. It had started with the moon, inaccessible poem that it was. Now men had walked upon it, rubber treads on a pearl of the gods. Perhaps it was an awareness of time passing, the last summer of the decade. Sometimes I just wanted to raise my hands and stop. But stop what? Maybe just growing up."

"Later he would say that the Church led him to God, and LSD led him to universe. He also said that art led him to the devil, and sex kept him with the devil."

"We used to laugh at our small selves, saying that I was a bad girl trying to be good and that he was a good boy trying to be bad. Through the years these roles would reverse, then reverse again, until we came to accept our dual natures. We contained opposing principles, light and dark."

"There were days, rainy gray days, when the streets of Brooklyn were worthy of a photograph, every window the lens of a Leica, the view grainy and immoble. We gathered our colored pencils and sheets of paper and drew like wild, feral children into the night, until, exhausted, we fell into bed. We lay in each other's arms, still awkward but happy, exchanging breathless kisses into sleep."

"The artist seeks contact with his intuitive sense of the gods, but in order to create his work, he cannot stay in this seductive and incorporeal realm. He must return to the material world in order to do his work. It's the artist's responsibility to balance mystical communication and the labor of creation."

day 3: A picture of the cast from your favorite show.

oh, i always have the hardest time picking favorites. ask me to pick my top 5 books or movies or songs and i'll be at it for days - never satisfied and feeling guilty for forgetting or leaving treasured loved ones off. so here's two that have held constant over the past few years, the larry sanders show and doctor katz, + one new discovery, united states of tara.

pen friends? (again?)

brautigan.jpg_effected-003.jpg

i know i wrote up a post mentioning this this past summer, but for real this time! once upon a time i was really into sites like postcardx and live journal swap groups and some of those other craft/music/zinester trade things and it always made for a happy mailbox as opposed to my current dreaded mailbox of bill collecting doom. so if any of you guys are interested i'd like to start up a little softspoken snail mail list. i'll be sending out shop postcards/newsletters/lookbooks every once in a while and i'll pick one or two different addresses each month to send out samples of new softspoken designs. or maybe i'll just send a happy goody care package sometimes too. and if i can ever get my shit together - hopefully i can get a zine or two going to maybe send out as well. i used to do this often in my college days and i've been itching to do something similar lately. lots of ideas so far, but no execution - hopefully soon. so if ya wanna get some mail from me - send me your address and blog link (so i know who ya are!) to reoglesby@yahoo.com - don't be shy - even if you're not much of a blog commenter (i'm not either though i'm trying to be better 'bout that) feel free to send it anyway.

if you're not into snail mail you can also subscribe to my newsletter by viewing my blog page and entering your email into that little box up there on the top right. i haven't even sent out my first yet, so i'm pretty sure i won't be flooding your inbox with spammy things - just an occassional update or sale code here and there.

photo meme: day one

i've kind of been at a loss about what to blog about - other than my usual ootd and new projects/designs posts - so i snagged this little photo meme from tumblr or somewhere (livejournal?) to use as a blogging prompt.

day 1: A picture of you with 10 facts.

IMG_0079-001a.jpg

1. i have a bachelor's degree in english from the university of alabama. my master's is in library science from the university of south carolina. yet, admittedly, i have pretty horrible grammar when it comes to this blog.

2. i procrastinate far too often and it often ends up biting me in the ass. i always get things done, so it's not that i'm lazy, just never when i should.

3. i'm messy.

4. i can be a bit obsessive at times when it comes to my hair.

5. i have been published in two books (photos), but my very own book comes out this september and i can't wait. it's a crochet pattern book published by lark crafts. it all seems a little unreal at times and i get excited over little things like my isbn (9781600599262, if you're wondering).

6. i get antsy if i don't make or, at least, work on making something new each day.

7. i have too many clothes. overwhelmingly too many. i'm working on it.

8. blogging and online personas often perplex me. i waffle back and forth between oversharing and business only. the result of coming of age in the heyday of livejournal, i suppose (and before that opendiary and before that just my own little domain), but now i feel the pressure and need to rein it all in while simultaneously missing the community and friendships that were a part of those sites.

9. for years i didn't drink caffeine or watch tv. now i drink caffeine and watch tv.

10. 30 yrs old. vegetarian. virgo. in a soon-to-be 5 yr relationship. 2 cats. 1 dog. aunt. sister. daughter. anything else?

took these photos of this new cowl color option for the shop while i was doing my outfit of the day from the 16th. i always try to incorporate some of my pieces into my outfit shots to kill two birds with one stone and get them up and listed. otherwise i'll procrastinate shooting them and end up with a pile of things that aren't doing much except taking up space. plus, if i can't wear them i wouldn't expect anyone else to either.

i'm beginning to become a huge fan of shawls. before i'd usually just wear them wrapped around my neck like a scarf, but now i love them thrown over the shoulders. i'm also in love with the colors of this yarn and the ombre effect. it's a little more pink in person, but just the right amount. the necklace is another piece i made when i was experimenting with different ways to stiffen and starch. obviously this technique was not a winner - it's a bit floppy now and needs to be redone. but i kind of like it how it is, too.

when i went home for the holidays i made sure to raid my closet. i had a sneaking suspicion that there were some things in there i might enjoy dragging out again and i was right. i think i got these when i was in high school, some time in the 90's. they're super comfortable in spite of the fact that it seems my feet have gotten smaller over the years. i guess it's a little weird to see trends you took part in the first time swing back 'round, but at least i don't have to shell out the $$ for these on urban outfitters:

i'm in <3 love <3 with this new hat design. it was a total bitch of a pattern to get right, but worth all the effort and one sleepless night of stitching and restitching. plus i'm a little obsessive about making sure all my rounds work out evenly. i'm now working on a light grey/ deep pink variation, but this charcoal and red is so good. i also really like the fit - it's a little different than my other berets - and so easy to wear. i may write up the pattern to share on ravelry soon, but i still want to tweak it a tiny bit more to make sure it's just right. available in shop here.
