coming soon
i originally opened my etsy shop with
the intention of selling clothing i
reconstructed or made myself. work
and time and who knew those berets
would take off and all postponed it.
sales have been somewhat slower in
january so there's been more sitting
on the floor drawing patterns on old
newspaper and flipping through this
book which isn't much help at all but
good enough i guess. the thing about
being self taught is you never really
know if you've actually gotten it right,
but i like them and i'm going to take
the chance and hope someone else will,
too.

7 things

random things about myself.
for some reason mine are entirely grey:
1. when i was 9-10-11, my mom ran over
my papa's pug, flo, with her car. i stepped
out and went on his porch to call her and
she came running up to me wagging her
tail with her eyeball hanging from a strand.
it was so strange and weird and odd and i
half laughed and cried and reached down to
pet her.
2. in grade 3 - grade 8 i was the shy fat
quiet ugly girl with stringy hair and an
apologetic presence which provoked either
acrid disgust or faux friendly pity from peers.
3. it was the same struggle in college, except
i was invisible and unhappily married and
afraid to leave my apartment.
4. now, as i am, boys sometimes tell
me i am pretty and sometimes i am resentful
because i know that before, they never would
have noticed.
5. i probably place too much self importance on
pretty. pretty will get you pretty far - andy
warhol said that.
6. i spent all of my adolescence dreaming of
ways to escape mississippi and now, sometimes,
i am dreaming to go back.
7. when my mom was pregnant with me she
had a dog who got caught in a trap and chewed
away his own leg to escape. my very superstitious
granny was sure i'd be born with a malformed or
no leg at all. i was born with both fine, but there's a birth-
mark near my ankle which always reminds my mom
of this story.

we were all new to the story and skeptical, but by the
end of the show we didn't care since some of the lines
had us shaking our head or our hearts falling in the pit
of our stomachs.
afterwards we waited around to talk to him and finally
we did, or m did anyway, i can't really talk to anyone,
for some reason i don't know how or it just doesn't happen.
but i stood around and listened and nodded and smiled
and it was easy to see he was a sweet kind peaceful sort
of man, quick to hug or offer a hand or touch the shoulder.
he didn't seem in any hurry to get away or to move on
but stayed and would have stayed as long as we were there.
m kept pressing him for his influences, asking who he'd
listen to and who he'd like, and he'd never answer straight-
forward but kept telling of bits of songs or tiny parts that
hit him in the gut and i remember him saying it broke my
heart or a neil young quote broke his heart and all
these little bits of music that weren't by anyone in particular
but just broke his heart and i think that's why it reminded me
of that scene where townes van zandt's sitting outside of a
trailer with his bearded buddy firing rifle shots and he
said, "there's brain death which i suffered when i was three
and there's respiratory death which i haven't suffered yet
and there's heart death, which i go through like every two or three
months" and that's what i took away from what he was saying,
that same sort of thing, and it made sense to me anyway.

finishing touches
i made this blanket for my friend ann LAST christmas.
it's been sitting around waiting for all those ends to be
woven in forever. since weaving yarn ends has become
m's number one position at softspoken - i put him to work
on this one as well. <3
podcast recommendations anyone?
podcasts are the thing i turn to for entertainment while
doing all my softspoken crochet orders. my absolute
favorite is wnyc's radiolab. then of course, this american
life, and all the little npr ones like pop culture, story of the
day, fresh air, etc. and savage love and sound opinions.
i also download the sound of young america, the slate, the
moth, tavis smiley, and things like that, but only really listen
to them if there's someone on the show i like or the subject
sounds intriguing. i just downloaded the recent ricky gervais,
steve merchant, karl pilkington release, but does anyone have
any other must listens that are in this vein? i'd love something
else similar to radiolab - intelligent and entertaining and science
or philosophy related. or something laid back and hilarious similar
to what the ricky gervais show does/did. and just audio, too -
i'm not very good at watching and crocheting at the same time :)
yesterday.
last night m and i splurged and ate at mai
thai, our current favorite local restaurant.
sitting next to us was a 40ish 50ish pair on
an internet date - the woman calling her friends
with updates as he left for the restroom and later
lying her hands flat on the table next to her wine
glass as temptation for him to grab hold of them
and eventually it worked.
after dinner we decided against going out and
instead popped popcorn and watched errol
morris's vernon florida which i found at big lots
in mississippi for $3. we liked it a lot but it was
short so we followed it with across the universe.
it was awful so we spent most of the time making
love instead. around 1 we put on the office, but
fell asleep two episodes in.
