halloween 2007 - the making

the source:

john and yoko - bed in 1969

i found my gown on the clearance rack at dillards. it seemed as though white cotton gowns were no longer in existence after searching the thrift stores and every other department store around. his pajamas are from kmart. originally baby blue, we soaked them in bleach which took out the baby blue but left the stripes. my wig i found at hipwazee and after searching and searching for a decent brown wig for m we had to settle on giving a plain black witch's wig a haircut. i sewed the pillowcases from scrap white muslin and m drew a remarkable reproduction with fabric markers and sharpies. creamy white daisies from the grocery store round the corner. black wet n wild eyeliner gave m his third eye.

notebook - october 20th, 2007

went for a walk round my neighborhood listening to npr pop culture podcasts and making a point to look and smile at whomever i passed instead of looking down or at the trees or pretending to see something over there. i walked for an hour and by the time i was done it was 11:50 and at 1 i was supposed to be at m's so i readied myself by showering and dressing in a crisp brown cotton jumper dress and drove over. and m in his t shirt a perfect blue and m in his smile and m in his beard and m and m and m.

round 1:30 we went to the art museum, the three of us, m, charlie, and i, to see the masterpieces of american photography exhibit. dorothea langes and steiglitz and an angela davis wanted poster and mostly the war photos and mostly the korean war photos and wondered what it must've been like for pa and what he must've seen and what they're seeing now over there in a new war with new soldiers and new faces crying with new eyes pleading just wanna go home, can see it in their eyes wanting to curl up in their mama's lap or their girl loves and wanting to just make it stop, just young baby boys and inside i felt my heart ache a little and i wanted to sit in the corner and cry some, for just a little while, and in front of another photo i told m we should picket army recruiting stations or not so much picket as sit peacefully with signs saying stop sending our children to war or so but i dont think he was up for it and so i thought of slaughterhouse five and how he named it the children's crusade and the wife in the kitchen saying you were just babies then and all of it.

but really it wasn't all of this so somber, i was just thinking quietly inside a little and feeling an ache a little, and wanting to do something a little, but mostly i was moving on to the next photo, a portrait of stravinsky by chuck close or an old woman smiling in a garden with her prize squash and then you start to forget again, a little.

current read

current read

Why Me? The Sammy Davis, Jr. Story by Sammy Davis, Jr. and Jane and Burt Boyar

currently round 2/3 of the way through. i started this when i was working part time as a shelver at a teeny branch of the local public library before i landed my current cataloging job at the university. my shifts were 4 hours and it only took me a quarter of that to do all i had to do so the rest of my time was spent meandering round the stacks until something grabbed my attention long enough that i'd stand in one spot reading for hours until time to go home. in the few months i was there i read tom stoppard's rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, vonnegut's man without a country, richard pryor's autobiography - pryor convictions, and cynthia rylant's something permanent not to mention the countless others that i read bits and pieces of. i've never been much of a biography reader until fairly recently, always more a fan of the diaries and journals. but this particular one is really so very good, sometimes when i'm with m i'll just go on and on about it. the civil rights movement, martin luther king, jr, bobby kennedy's campaign, the black panthers, the assasinations, hollywood's and sammy's own (though only for the ritualistic orgies, certainly) dabblings in satanism, to fatherhood and fame and image and frank and money and movies and women and fashion. it does read on the swingin cat sammy baby hokey talk at times, but in turn has more than once brought me to the verge of tears with its portrayal of the times, the movements, the pitfalls, and the heartbreak.

from friday, october 12, 2007:

coat - not sure, canvas maybe
high waisted denim romper - gojane
shirt - ann taylor via goodwill by the pound
tights - kmart
boots - target clearance
makeshift fannypack - purse from target clearance
necktie - found in a box on the curb on trash day

worn out to the whig with ann and later joined by m. we had too much that night and ate away our headaches at lizard's thicket the next morning with a plate of collard greens, black eyed peas, squash casserole and cornbread muffins.

shoe want

shoe want

i've been casually browsing around for an affordable oxford type heel for quite a while now, but wanted a heel under 3 inches which narrowed my search quite a bit. today i stumbled upon these from the laura clement collection at la redoute which seem to be just the thing.

photo-less

october 16, 2007

tuesday my camera decided it was no longer going to work much to my annoyance since i was wearing my moon monster-picked outfit and was muchly in need of a w_r photo. now i am stuck with an old webcam from the 90's whose quality is less than so or sitting in m's lap with his camera taking faux photobooth self portraits of the two of us an hour at a time- the latter being not so much stuck with as happily attached to. this photo being from such. we spent that night with me on the exercise bike while m cooked tofu and veggies in plum sauce and later m teaching me bass, my first lesson, and trying to keep up plodding along through a few of his songs and you ain't goin nowhere and across the universe and many rivers to cross and i don't remember what else before it was time for bed and sweet holdings and mornings that come too early.

stylist for a day, v.2

The result of my second remix a remixer attempt, this one for Patrick/aka one half of hen power whose attire here was chosen by me. Also pictured is the lovely Amelia (only sleeping) whose livejournal, doublespeak, I've long been a (rather silent) friend and fan of. I particularly enjoy the way the color blocking of the hat plays off the stripes in that wonderful plaid shirt. And how the pink in her sweater picks up the tiny stripes in his shirt. Separately they look fantastic, but together it's just doubly so.

i am quite enamoured with this little dress here which is so very madeline though at $395 it does not even have a tip of a toe in my price range. it does look rather copyable though...

stylist for a day

this thread from my favorite fashion group, wardrobe remix, has created a sort of creative collaboration fashion project from afar. the idea is to go through participating remix users sets and dress them up as you see fit, and if they so desire they'll put the outfit together and wear it out. though going through some of these fashionistas' virtual closets is a dream, it's not as easy a task as one would think! when picking outfits for others virtually i was surprised to learn how conscious i was of textures and touch and how i couldn't take such a thing into account when picking from a group of photos. however, the outfit i chose for flickr user, moon monster (shown above - check out her blog haute pocket), turned out far better than i even imagined it. more photos to come of both outfits chosen for me and those chosen by me...
